Rev. Dewitt Rhodes, now pastor of the Christ Redeemed Missionary Baptist Church, was a member of the Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church from 1951 to 1978. He was called to the ministry in 1954 and was licensed and ordained under the late Rev. Dr. W. P Alexander. After Rev. Alexander’s' passing in 1977, Rev. Rhodes served as acting pastor and pastor of the Greater New Hope Baptist Church.
Under divine leadership, on August 16, 1978, Rev. Rhodes founded the Christ Redeemed Missionary Baptist Church. We needed a building and through the countless efforts of the Most Rev. William Cosgrove, Rev. Bernard O’Sullivan, and Rev. Driscoll, the St. Elizabeth Church edifice located at 2419 Ridge Avenue was donated. The building was in ruins and until renovation was satisfactory and with handful of members, services were held at the home of our pastor.
We have now been in the building since January 28, 1979. We have more than 350 members on roll, however, only about 30 are active members, We have many organizations in our church including the Trustee Ministry, Deacon Ministry, Sunday School, Mass Choir, Usher Board, Youth Ministry, Praise Dance Ministry and Bible Classes.
September 1982, marked a new era for our church. We began holding our worship services upstairs. We thank God and all those faithful people who made this possible. We now take the time to acknowledge and remember in our hearts those faithful members who has gone on before us: Sis. Savannah Rhodes, Sis. Mary Taylor, Mr. & Mrs. Dewitt and Rebecca Weary, Rev. Albert Perkins, Rev. Otis Weaver, Deacon and Sis Willie Elbert, Mother Adelia Wade, Sis. Viola Edwards, Sis. Bernice Williams, Sis. Regina Burns, Sis. Dorothy Coulter, Sis. Orelia Tolliver and Bro. Dewitt (Richard) Rhodes Jr.
April 1997, marked yet another milestone in the building of our Church, A partial new roof was added, a restroom installed, floors carpeted and new pews, pulpit furniture and a baptismal pool were purchased. In January 2001, our own Rev. Vincent Rhodes founded the True Vine Christian Church. Also in 2002, another one of our own, Rev. Ann Rhodes founded Tabernacle Of Praise Freewill Baptist Church. We are very proud of Rev. Dr. Vincent Rhodes and Rev. Ann Rhodes and we pray that their ministries will continue to grow.
The Lord to us to another level when in June 2002 Rev. David Rhodes was ordained and then appointed as Co- Pastor of this Church and in June 2004 Rev. Dr. Dewitt Rhodes was presented with his Honoree Doctorate of Theology from the Shepherd Bible College. In recent improvements, on February 27, 2006 the Lord blessed us once again and allowed us to purchase the school edifice located next door to our church giving us ownership of both parcels on our side of the street and in 2008 we were able to purchase another small parcel on the next block starting us on our journey to owning the entire block.
Our most Recent Milestones were in January 2011 Rev. David Rhodes ventured out on his own and founded the Walking by Faith Christian Church, we wish his ministry well and are praying that it will continue to grow. Then in May of 2011 Pastor Ann and Minister Phillip Rhodes combined their church with ours to make it a Family Worship Center.
We have come a long way since August of 1978 and we know that we still have a long way to go. We have started a new chapter in our ministry, and we know with prayer and faith in God, all of our goals and dreams will be realized.
